After a long stretch, the blood flow to the muscles increases. The nervous system regulates the muscles and has two main components: ‘sympathetic’ (fight or flight) and ‘parasympathetic’ (rest and digest).
Static stretching in the parasympathetic nervous system increases movement, promoting relaxation. Though during a stretch, the heart rate may increase, it appears to decrease afterward.
